Big Thief: Capacity
Big Thief's sophomore album 'Capacity' is a beautifully haunting journey of complicated families and the inherit trauma of being part of a family. There are a number of songs that have been ingrained on my heart, namely Shark Smile, Mythological Beauty and especially Mary. Mary is about a childhood friend, but the somber storytelling and the beautiful melody bring anyone back to their most bitter-sweet, film-hazed memories of youth. Those songs, and the whole album, remind you of the good and the bad of childhood - the messiness, the trauma, the friends, the family, the hurt and the love. They make you play a highlight and a lowlight reel, even though it may be painful to revisit them.
If you want to cry, or if you want to sleep, or if you want some painful nostaglia (or perhaps all three?) this album is bittersweet perfection.
